Why Most People Don't Achieve Their Goals

Success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. What this means is, without first knowing what it is that you want to achieve, success may always seem to elude you. This is the reason why goal setting is always a point of emphasis when it comes to personal development.

So, assuming that most of us do know the importance of setting goals and do indeed make it a point to set goals regularly, then why is it that a lot of people still end up falling short of hitting their targets? Have you been this position before, where you know what you're aiming for but just can't seem to get it? Well, you are not alone - many feel just as lost as you do.

I’ve been studying about the nature of success for some time now and what I want to share with you in this article are three reasons why most people don't achieve their goals. While there may be other contributing factors to one’s lack of success, I find these three things stated below to be what hinders the success of people the most. 
 

1. Not Really Knowing What You Want


I want to be successful. 
I want to make more money. 
I want to provide more for my family. 
I want to lose weight.
I want to lead a healthy lifestyle.

These are the goals that most of us have, and they may seem like good goals to have. However, I'd like to ask you a question for each of the goal stated above.  

  1. What exactly does it mean to be more successful? 
  2. How much money must you make before it counts as having made more money? 
  3. What does providing more for your family mean? 
  4. How much weight do you want to lose? 
  5. What does leading a healthy lifestyle mean?

I often share at the conferences and seminars that I speak at about the secrets of highly successful people and the three pillars of success - Clarity, Strategy, and Breakthrough. Your journey towards success can only begin when you are crystal clear about what you want, and most people lack this clarity. Goals that are vague without clear indicators for completion are why people find it hard to achieve their goals. They do not know where the finish line is and therefore do not know how to get there.

Think about it, when using Google Maps to get from one place to another, there are going to be two important information you must provide to get the best route planned out - i) your destination, and ii) your current location. How different will your results be between just keying in the area, for example from Toa Payoh to Pasir Ris, compared to keying in the full address with street numbers and postal codes?

Therefore, always be crystal clear about what is it that you want to achieve in life too. Be as accurate as possible, and ensure clear markers for successful completion.

2. Not Having The Health To Support Your Journey

While many will start off feeling motivated and driven to achieve their goals, what typically gets in the way is the mental fatigue that sets in when dealing with the problems and challenges that may come their way.

Part of your journey towards success is learning how to do new things. These will possibly mean doing things you have never done before, and as such, it may seem challenging and uncomfortable in the beginning. Without the mental strengths such as perseverance, resilience, positive thinking, and focus on pushing through, giving up is going to look like the best option. And like any other muscle in your body, strengthening these mental strengths will take time in training before they become rock solid. What supports this process? It’s your physical health. Hence the saying “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind”.

In this day and age where everything seems to be moving at such a fast pace, the need to exercise has become secondary to many. Combine this with an unhealthy diet and lack of rest; you now have the perfect recipe to weaken your mind and body, making it easy to abandon your goals.

3. Not Knowing Yourself, And The People Around You.

Human relations is one of the toughest skill to master, and as such, it is often overlooked in one’s journey towards success. Human relations isn’t just about knowing how to have a relationship with others, but also to know how to have a relationship with yourself.

Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Social Skills - These are the four core competencies of Emotional Intelligence. Mastering these skills will not only allow you to identify your strengths, weaknesses, and behaviours but also of others around you. This will then enable you to manage yourself better, to work within your strength zones, and to know how to garner help from others when needed.
